mILITARY aFFAIRS COUNCIL

The Central Hillsborough County Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Council is dedicated to serving and supporting our military (past, present and families) in the Central Hillsborough County community through advocating and educating the CHCC members and the community on how they can assist and participate in enriching the lives of our military community.  The Military Affairs Council advocates for the welfare and rights of military veterans, including access to healthcare, education, employment, and other essential services. The Council will work closely with veterans' organizations and government agencies to address the needs of former service members.  The Military Affairs Council will also facilitate communication and collaboration between the military, government, and civilian sectors to promote understanding, support, and cooperation on military-related issues. This may involve organizing public forums, outreach events, and educational programs.

David Hines, United States Marine Corps

David is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. David served in the Marine Corps from 2008 until 2012. While in the Marine Corps, David was stationed in Japan, where he was involved with a number of humanitarian and peacekeeping missions in Korea, the Philippines, Bangladesh, and Thailand. David discovered his passion for the law while in the Marine Corps. After exiting the Marine Corps, David moved to Tampa to be with his now wife, Ava. He attended law school at Stetson University in Gulfport. While enrolled at Stetson, David had the opportunity to intern with a federal judge at the District Court for the Middle District of Florida in Tampa. David also took part in Stetson’s Veteran’s Law Institute, where David was able to assist Veterans with claims before the Department of Veterans Affairs.

After graduating from Stetson, David started his career as an attorney at a law firm in St. Petersburg, Florida, practicing business and commercial law and litigation. While there, David was also able to continue his work with assisting Veterans with claims before the VA. After leaving the firm in St. Petersburg, David worked with Todd Foster Law Group in Tampa, practicing white collar criminal defense. In January of 2025, David started his own practice—the Hines Law Firm. David founded the Hines Law Firm with the goal of providing the community with a law firm specializing in catering to nearly all the legal needs of businesses and their owners. Since its opening, the Hines Law Firm has quickly grown—a feat that David contributes to the Central Hillsborough Chamber of Commerce and the community that supports it.

Maria Suarez, Staff Sergeant
Florida Army National Guard | Business Development Manager | Veteran Community Advocate

Staff Sergeant Maria Suarez has proudly served in the Florida Army National Guard since April 2018, currently assigned as an Air Defense Battle Management System Operator with Bravo Battery, 1st Battalion, 265th Air Defense Artillery in Deland, Florida.

A native of Queens, New York and the daughter of Colombian immigrants from Bogotá, Maria began her military career in 1998 on Active Duty as an Administrative Specialist. She served at Fort Bliss, Texas and Fort Bragg, North Carolina until 2002, gaining foundational experience in administrative operations. After a 16-year break in service, she reaffirmed her dedication to military service by joining the Florida Army National Guard—demonstrating exceptional resilience and commitment by completing basic training a second time.

In her current National Guard role, SSG Suarez has participated in high-level multinational exercises including Avenger Triad 24, a U.S. Army Europe and Africa command post exercise with participants from the U.S. Army, NATO, and 10 participating countries. The exercise aimed to improve joint integration and refine operational processes between U.S. and NATO forces, while also assessing the future Army 2030 force structure and capabilities—including the Theater Strike Effects Group, Theater Information Advantage Element, Long-Range Fires Battalion, and the Armored Division of 2030.
From January 2023 to January 2024, she deployed with the 164th Air Defense Artillery Brigade in support of the Joint Task Force – National Capital Region (NCR). Her mission focused on defending the airspace over Washington, D.C., protecting the nation’s capital against aerial threats, and supporting homeland security operations.
SSG Suarez also supported domestic hurricane emergency operations, working directly at the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) at the 164th Air Defense Artillery Brigade in Orlando, Florida during regional hurricane responses. In this capacity, she supported state officials by providing critical guidance on National Guard capabilities and helping coordinate military support to civil authorities during times of crisis.

In her civilian career, Maria has been with CareerSource Tampa Bay since 2012, serving as a Business Development Manager in various capacities focused on community engagement and workforce development. She leads efforts to coordinate veteran-focused job fairs and networking events and has built impactful partnerships with organizations such as James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital, Blue Star Families, MacDill Air Force Base, and Military & Family Readiness teams across the region. Her work has directly supported National Guard and Reserve members, Transitioning Service Members, Veterans, and Military spouses in connecting with meaningful employment opportunities and career resources.

Maria is also a dedicated mother. Her daughter, a graduate of St. Leo University, works as a Sales Specialist with Resident Home. Her son serves in the Florida National Guard as a Signal Support Systems Specialist while attending Hillsborough Community College and working with Marriott as a Safety and Security Officer.

SSG Suarez exemplifies leadership, resilience, and service—in uniform, in the workforce, and in her community.
